San Francisco, Oct. 18, 2010 – The SCSI Trade Association (STA) announced today that the draft standard of Serial Attached SCSI (SAS)-2.1 was forwarded to INCITS (International Committee for Information Technology Standards), a committee under the direction of ANSI (American National Standards Institute) for public review on September 16, 2010. INCITS is the primary organization for fostering the development of technology standards in the United States. The SAS-2.1 draft standard was developed by the T10 Committee, an INCITS Committee with the responsibility of developing SCSI standards.
The earlier SAS-2.0 standard was divided into two separate standards: one for physical layers (SAS-2.1) and one for SAS Protocol Layers (SPL). Minor revisions have also been included in this process. Nearly all 2nd generation SAS products were designed and implemented in accordance with SAS-2.1 and SPL standards, and as such, do not represent a new generation of SAS. Products implemented to the SAS-2.1 standard, now in the review process with expected publication early next year, will continue to be referenced as 6Gb/s SAS. The SPL standard was forwarded to INCITS on July 15, 2010, for public review.
Marty Czekalski, Vice President and T10 Liaison for STA and the Interface Architecture Initiatives Manager at Seagate Technology commented, “STA members are very encouraged to see the draft standard advance to INCITS for review and publication. SAS-2.1 includes Advanced Connectivity features which lay the groundwork for the next generation of SAS which will operate at 12Gb/s.”
