Near-line archive solution enhances productivity and reduces production costs

City of Industry, CA – June 12, 2008 – Advanced Industrial Computer (AIC), an industry leading provider of OEM/ODM server and storage solutions, announced today the implementation of its rack-mount server chassis technology with SeaChange International’s MediaLibrary near line storage system for television broadcasters, an innovative solution that has been deployed by Los Angeles PBS affiliate KCET-TV. The system provides KCET with an accessible, fast and scalable solution ideally suited to meet their growing production and play-to-air workflow needs.

KCET’s storage requirements were outgrowing the capabilities of their former system. The cumbersome workflow was dated and slow, with archiving data from on-line to near-line storage taking more than an hour to move larger, high-definition files. From an IT management standpoint, the excessive archiving time was inefficient and costly to the production process, prompting KCET to source a large-capacity, scaleable solution that would effectively meet their needs.

For its near-line storage solution, KCET selected the ML1G, which combines SeaChange’s archive technology and expansion unit with AIC’s customized server chassis and the XJ1100 series SAS/SATA storage solution. The new system eliminates the need for an intermediate software solution, now only requiring a GMT file to move data from on-line to near-line storage, minimizing time expenditures.

As one of the first ML1G users, KCET has found it to be a highly functional solution that provides the robust performance, user-friendly interface and time-saving requirements they were seeking, ultimately reducing archiving time by 75% and increasing productivity exponentially. The resulting system is a cost-effective, fault-resilient archive, ideally suited to meet the demands of the broadcast industry.

“The AIC and SeaChange solution has not only reduced KCET’s operational overhead, but also improved performance and lowered our production costs, said Gordon Bell, KCET’s Vice President of Engineering. “This new system is the ideal long-term solution we were looking for that will grow to meet our future needs.”

“SeaChange is committed to helping television operators transition to all-digital broadcasting and tapeless workflows through developments such as the ML1G,” said Sherry Zhu, director of server and storage solutions, SeaChange International. “Our technology integrates seamlessly with the AIC hardware and has delivered on our promise to provide KCET with a next-generation archive that addresses its current needs while providing the flexibility to expand alongside the entire operation.”
