About Fabric Computing

"Fabric Computing" is a reflection of the ongoing evolution of the enterprise data center. Every networked service in the n-tier data center environment is hosted by a networked computing system that consists of multiple hardware and software elements. In the past this system might have been a single server with captive physical (storage, compute, and network) and intellectual (static and dynamic information) resources. Increasingly, however, a host system is comprised of physical and intellectual assets distributed across a fabric infrastructure. We refer to these avenues of innovation as Fabric Computing, and we segment the opportunity into three markets: Fabric Systems, Information Lifecycle Management, and IT Lifecycle Management.

  • Fabric System vendors address the demand for modular, pay-as-you-grow computing systems that incorporate physically distributed, concurrently accessed components. Fabric Systems are cannibalizing higher cost, more proprietary computing system designs in the large and medium enterprise while enjoying increasing penetration in small enterprise environments. Vendors addressing this market offer enabling components, systems and software.
  • Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) vendors address the demand to automate and optimize the utilization of distributed intellectual computing resources by enterprise applications. Enterprise customers are struggling to effectively manage static and dynamic information from creation to deletion for maximum return on investment. ILM solutions strive to assure that information is in the right place at the right time and on the right media. Vendors addressing this market offer enabling systems and software.
  • IT Lifecycle Management (ITLM) vendors address the demand to automate optimize the utilization of distributed physical computing resources by enterprise applications. Enterprise customers are struggling to effectively manage distributed compute, storage, and network resources from acquisition to end of life. ITLM solutions automate and optimize resource planning, provisioning, operation, and invoicing. Vendors addressing this market offer enabling systems and software.
