SCSI Trade Association and T10 Committee Receive
Donation of Powerful HP ProLiant Serve
Serial Attached SCSI T10 Standards Committee Becomes
an Early User of Small Form Factor SAS Disk Drives
San Francisco, April 17, 2006 - >The SCSI Trade Association (STA), a member-run industry association established
to support and promote SCSI technology, announced today that the T10 technology
and standards committee, which has the INCITS1 mandate for Serial Attached
SCSI (SAS) technology development and standardization, is the recipient of
a new HP server. The server, an HP ProLiant DL580 G3, was installed recently.
All files have been transferred from the previous server and operational
support for T10 members and committees has begun.
Server specifications include:
- Eight 36-gigabyte Small Form Factor (SFF) 2.5” SAS hard disk drives
- Four single core 3.0 gigahertz processors
- One P600 smart array controller
- Eight gigabytes of random access memory (RAM)
- Dual power supply
Harry Mason, Director, Industry Marketing, LSI Logic and President of STA
said, ”STA is exceedingly grateful for the timely gift of the server
and the support it will provide to all T10 Committee activities including
the research and development of future SAS standards. As SAS acceptance in
the market continues to grow, STA anticipates that it will quickly become
the leading interface for enterprise storage.
Paul Perez, Vice President of Storage, Networking and Infrastructure, Industry
Standard Servers, HP, commented, “HP is a long-time STA member and
very pleased to provide a new server to support T10’s important work.
After developing and bringing HP SFF SAS
products to market, the importance of providing computing support for SFF
SAS standard development is very real. Without a new server, development
of the next SFF SAS generation would likely be slowed and certainly more
difficult.”
“T10 is delighted to have the new HP SAS-based server,” said
John Lohmeyer, Principal Engineer, LSI Logic and Chair of the T10 Technical
Committee. “It replaces an aging
-More-
single-processor machine no longer supported by its manufacturer. The new
server provides much needed computing support for the development of SAS
standards and all other T10 activities. Its computing power will ease and
speed the committee’s technical projects as well as promote better
communications within the committee.”
SAS market entry is the result of four years of preparation, including development
of the SAS technology, standardization of the specifications, interoperability
testing, and finally the recent market entry of SAS storage systems. Testing
for SAS interoperability during development and early product introductions
has virtually eliminated interoperability and compatibility problems.
About STA
The SCSI Trade Association was established in 1995 to provide a focal point
for members to communicate the benefits of SCSI to the industry. STA promotes
the understanding and use of SCSI technology and influences the evolution
of SCSI standards to meet future industry needs. The Association has a
nine-member Board of Directors that oversees the Marketing Communications
and Technology Committees and all STA activities. To subscribe to Serial
