Storage developers begin to integrate increased functionality as they bring new SSD products to market

SAN FRANCISCO, August 11, 2015 -- Revealing a new Storage Intelligence feature that improves the performance and endurance of solid state disk drives (SSDs), the SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) Trade Association (STA) today announced that the INCITS T10 Technical Committee has approved it for inclusion in the SCSI Block Commands feature set (SBC-4). The industry-leading feature will be used in products making use of the popular Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) protocol that delivers the performance and reliability required for enterprise-class storage.

SAS Hard Disk Drives made their way to the market back in 2004. It has been 11 years and these storage devices have, and continue to see a healthy product life cycle. SAS HDDs are seen in multiple segments of the market, including Nearline, 10KRPM, and 15KRPM. Customers who have implemented with Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) devices like the dual port functionality and robust protocol that comes with SAS.

STA President Marty Czekalski participated on a panel entitled "New Applications, New Technologies - What's Ahead for Content Storage" on January 5, 2015, at Storage Visions in Las Vegas, NV. During this session, Czekalski provided an overview of new zoned block devices and how this new SCSI command set will allow applications to better take advantage of new storage technologies such as Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) and enable continued decreases in storage costs.
